Elisa Toloba and Juan Carlos Muñoz SEA Prize for best PhD dissertation
Elisa Toloba Jurado, Consolider-GTC member of the Galaxies-UCM team, was awarded the prize of the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA) for the best dissertation of 2011: "The Origin of Dwarf Early-Type Galaxies."
Previously, the SEA awarded another Consolider-GTC researcher and member of GUAIX, Juan Carlos Muñoz, the prize for best thesis read in 2010. Both belong to the Department of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). From here, we would like to congratulate Elisa on the obtaining of this award.
Dark Skies
The Starlight Conference 2007 (World Conference in Defence of the Night Sky and the Right to Observe the Stars) in collaboration with UNESCO and the International Astronomical Union(IAU) launched an "initiative designed as an international action in defence of the values associated with the night sky and the general right to observe the stars.

This mosaic of the Iberian Peninsula at Night was build using ISS nocturnal images taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (2008-2012).
New server
A new rack Fujitsu RX-300 high-performance server powered by Intel Xeon X5687 CPU and 16 Gb of RAM has been acquired as reference computing system for the group.The new GUAIX translates into a much faster 24h available web server (2 Gbit Ethernet), database services, backup for critical files and other roles. This machine is being hosted by the UCM Data Processing Center, that guarantees 24h support.
