Background

I obtained my B.S. degree in Physics & Astrophysics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) in 1995. I did my Ph.D. at the Astrophysics Department of the same university between 1996-2000 under the supervision of Dr. Jaime Zamorano. Between 2000-2002 I was a JPL Postdoctoral scholar at IPAC working with Dr. Barry F. Madore. Between 2002-2005 I worked as a research associate at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington for the GALEX mission. For two years (2006-2007) I enjoyed a Marie Curie Experienced Researcher contract as a postdoc of the MAGPOP (Multi-wavelength Analysis of Galaxy POPulations) European Network at the Astrophysics Department of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). Currently I am a Ramón y Cajal Associate Professor at the same university where I am part of the Group of Extragalactic Astrophysics and Astronomical Instrumentation (GUAIX: Grupo UCM de Astrofísica Extragaláctica e Instrumentación Astronómica).

Research interests

I am mainly interested in Extragalactic Astronomy. My work have been mainly focused in the multiwavelength study of the stellar populations of local star-forming galaxies: from nearby grand-design spirals, to the more active UCM-Survey galaxies, finishing with the actively star-forming Blue Compact Dwarfs. See below for the description of the projects I am currently involved.

Projects I am currently responsible for:

GALEX Atlas of Nearby Galaxies (Gil de Paz et al. 2007, ApJS, 173, 185), level5 site, MAST High Level Science Products. See also the GALEX press release here.
CAHA-XUV: Project to obtain deep optical and near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of all Extended UV (XUV) disks in the GALEX Atlas of Nearby Galaxies using the telescopes of the Calar Alto observatory. For more information on the XUV emission in the disks of nearby spiral galaxies see our recent papers (Gil de Paz et al. 2005, ApJ 627, 29; Gil de Paz et al. 2007, ApJ 661, 115) and NASA's press release on the XUV disk of NGC4625.
Intermediate-redshift Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies: In collaboration with Kai G. Noeske & David Koo (UCSC) we are analyzing the photometric properties of intermediate-redshift dwarf galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) with confirmed spectroscopic redshifts from the ground (Keck & Magellan). See a recent related paper by Noeske et al. (2006, ApJ 640, L143) and the presentation at the First Symposium of Magellan Science.

Other projects I am also involved:

Local Volume Legacy (LVL) project. LVL is a Spitzer Cycle 4 Legacy survey of a complete volume-limited sample of 258 galaxies located within 11 Mpc that is focused on the study of star formation and its interaction with the ISM (both gas and dust) (PI: R. Kennicutt). LVL stands on the foundations of the 11HUGS (which I am also part of) and ANGST projects.
EMIR: Data Reduction Pipeline for EMIR, the NIR multiobject spectrograph for GTC (last minute image of GTC). (PI: J. Gallego)
MAGPOP-ITP: La Palma INTERNATIONAL TIME PROGRAMME: The Star Formation History of Dwarf Galaxies. (PI: R.F. Peletier)

Projects I was involved in the past (some of them are still partially on-going):

Palomar/Las Campanas Atlas of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies. We have completed an atlas of B,R,H $\alpha$ images of a sample of 114 BCDs using the 60-inch telescope in the Palomar Observatory and the 100-inch at Las Campanas (Gil de Paz, Madore, & Pevunova 2003, ApJS 147, 29, Gil de Paz & Madore 2005, ApJS 156, 345; see also the level 5 page of the Atlas). Within this Atlas we discovered a remarkable double-ring of star formation regions in Mrk409 (Gil de Paz et al. 2003, ApJ 596, L179).
Molecular gas in low-metallicity systems. See the press release with the results from our molecular gas mapping of the BCD Mrk86 (Gil de Paz et al. 2002, ApJ 573, L101).
