II Workshop ASTRID: Scientific and technological challenges in the development of astronomical instrumentation: E-ELT and ALMA

posterASTRIDFrom september 23rd to 25th, UCM hosted the II Astronomical instrumentation Workshop organized by ASTRID and The Astronomy Infraestructures Network (RIA). The goal of this workshop was to gather the scientific teams and the industries of the sector to expose their needs and projects, and share experiences. The workshop was aimed as well at serving as an echo to convince financing agencies and the astronomical community in general of the need to promote with decision the development of astrophysical instrumentation and the tools for the analysis of related data. The formation and acknowledgement of instrumentation astronomers will be a key factor for Spain to meet the requirements of its position in Astronomy in the next decades. December 9-11 AEGIS meeting hosted by UCM

Stars, dust and gas in nearby galaxies

Two papers leaded by GUAIX members have been recently published in the Astrophysical Journal. They describe the radial distribution of stars, dust and gas in galaxies from the SINGS sample, in order to find out how these components got assembled together during the galaxies' lifetime. In Paper I we describe and quantify the morphology of these galaxies at multiple wavelengths, from the far-ultraviolet to the far-infrared. In Paper II we focus on the radial distribution of different properties of dust: the attenuation, the dust column density, the abundance of PAHs or the dust-to-gas ratio, among others. These papers are part of Juan Carlos Muñoz-Mateos' thesis, and besides the GUAIX team they also include the collaboration of members of the GALEX and SINGS teams.

XXVII IAU General Assembly

Esther Mármol-Queraltó, GUAIX member, has attended to the XXVII General Assembly of the IAU, held in in Rio de Janeiro (Brasil) from August 3 to August 14. Esther presented a contributed talk in the Symposium 262: Stellar Populations-Planning for the Next Decade, entitled "Stellar population study in early-type galaxies: an approach from the K band", where she discussed the differences found in the near infrared measurements depending on the environment of the early-type galaxies. Inauguración del Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC)

El 24 de julio de 2009 SS.MM. los Reyes de España inauguraron el Gran Telescopio Canarias en el observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos en la Isla de La Palma.
