Star formation at the outer parts of a spiral galaxy

Using NASA GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) Armando Gil de Paz and coworkers has found new formed stars at the outskirst of the spiral galaxy M83. The picture shows an image wth the combined data obtained in UV, radio (coded in red). The newly discovered stars (in green) are far away from the center in regions where neutral hydrogen is the only avalilable element with almost no metal pollution from previous episodes of star formation.
